Basement Finishing

How to Hire a General Contractor

You’re ready to tackle that kitchen remodel. You can already see the finished product: Those sleek, white cabinets, the hardwood floors, and the quartz countertops. All that stands between you and your dream kitchen is actually hiring a general contractor to do the job. With so many home-improvement companies in the greater Kokomo area, just how can you choose the right one?

While we would love to just say, “hire us and be done with it!”, we know you need to go through the right process so you can feel confident in your decision. Toward that end, consider these tips for finding a contractor you can trust, courtesy of our crew at Hearn Construction, Inc.

1. Set your budget.

Before you even start looking for the right contractor, we recommend that you set your home-improvement budget. Doing so will help you be better able to talk with contractors and know whether they can work within your price point.

2. Gather recommendations.

Be sure to ask your friends and family members who recently had a kitchen remodel who they used. Ask them questions about the contractor’s workmanship, communication skills, professionalism, and timeliness. Consider both the positives and the negatives, and then note any general contractors you want to pursue further.

3. Do some sleuthing.

After you’ve compiled a list of a few potential remodelers, do your research. Check out customer reviews, read through their previous experience, and glance through their galleries of work (or ask for samples). You may even want to give them a call to get a feel for their customer service and day-to-day communication skills or to ask some questions.

4. Gather written quotes.

Get a written quote from a couple prospective contractors. That way, you can compare them to each other based not only on price, but also what’s included, your initial consultation, and their overall professionalism.

5. Make your decision.

After you’ve done your investigating, go with the general contractor with whom you feel most comfortable. At the end of the day, it’s your project, and you need to be confident with the crew working in your home.

For anyone living in Lafayette, Indianapolis, Kokomo, Muncie, and the greater central Indiana region, be sure to keep Hearn Construction on your list of potential contractors. Our team is skilled in both residential and commercial contracting. From complete kitchen renovations to basement finishing, we have both the skill and the drive to get your project done right the first time.
